A slap in the face can sting, but it can also awaken a sleeping giant. Such is the case with President Obama and his recent stinging slap to Israel. History might well remember it as the Orwellian “slap heard ‘round the world”, reverberating as a sobering reminder that, “Political language…is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind”. President Obama’s call for Israel to revert back to its indefensible pre-1967 ‘Auschwitz’ borders was a stunning shift from Presidential candidate Obama’s 2008 support for Israel’s “sacrosanct security”, “defensible borders”, and an “undivided Jerusalem”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rejection of this blindsiding change of course was immediate and unwavering. This included a demand for a “re-affirmation from President Obama of U.S. commitments made to Israel in 2004, that relate to Israel not having to withdraw to the 1967 lines. Those lines are indefensible and would leave major Israeli population centers in Judea and Samaria beyond those lines”.
Netanyahu again denounced Obama’s statement with unabashed clarity and statesmanship when the two met face-to-face in the Oval Office. To those of us who have grown accustomed to politicians uttering nuanced doublespeak, his words were like water in a desert. “Peace based on illusions will crash eventually on the rocks of Middle East reality.” How refreshing!
Netanyahu’s AIPAC speech was equally resounding and left an indelible impression. As he echoed the words of Thomas Jefferson, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” one couldn’t help but feel a strong camaraderie with him. From Israel to America, we stand shoulder-to-shoulder in defense of liberty. His fight is our fight, his cause our cause. To those enemies of truth and freedom we say, “Don’t tread on Bibi Netanyahu, he ain’t heavy, he’s our brother!”
President Obama’s betrayal of Israel has galvanized a unified movement of Christian and Jewish Americans in support of Israel. As Americans our allegiance to Israel runs deep, but our familial bond with her and the Jewish people runs deeper. Inherently we know that in standing up for Israel we are standing up for America.
As Christians, the Jews are our elder brothers and sisters in Faith. As Americans, the Jews are our elder brothers and sisters in Liberty.
Throughout the course of American history, Moses and the story of Exodus have been the iconic impetus for those seeking to break free from the shackles of oppression and tyranny. The story of Exodus chronicles the world’s first revolution. Hence, it can be said that Moses is the father of all Founding Fathers.
Founding Father and President John Adams said, “The Jews have done more to civilize men than any other nation. They are the most glorious Nation that ever inhabited the earth. The Romans and their Empire were but a bauble in comparison to the Jews. They have given religion to three-quarters of the Globe and have influenced the affairs of mankind more, and more happily than any other nation, ancient or modern.”
The Founding Fathers’ profound respect for biblical principles and “The People’s Law of Ancient Israel” culminated in our Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution.
Our Judeo-Christian roots of fidelity run deep. As such it is time for every American to stand in opposition to those who, from D.C. to Jerusalem, attempt to dim the light of freedom from that ‘shining city upon a hill’.
The sound of Obama’s “slap heard ‘round the world” is our clarion call to stand up for the sovereignty of our Jewish brethren. Arise, O sleeping giant!
